With so many great options, choosing the right one can be difficult, but we’re here to help! Comparing the characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages of each finish is a good place to start.

Characteristics: High shine, vibrant

Advantages: Enhances colors and depth, boosts visibility in low-light; excellent durability, more stain and fade resistant

Drawbacks: Prone to glare; shows fingerprints

Typical Applications: Retail graphics, vehicle wraps, outdoor signs 

Characteristics: Moderate sheen, satin feel

Advantages: Balanced gloss and glare reduction

Drawbacks: Color slightly softened

Typical Applications:  Portraits, fine art, indoor signage 

Characteristics: Flat, non-reflective

Advantages: Glare-free, fingerprint free, hides scratches

Drawbacks: Less vivid imagery

Typical Applications:  Wayfinding, architectural wraps, light-sensitive environments. Good for projects with a great deal of text.

Characteristics: Extremely non-reflective

Advantages: Completely glare-free, but still provides a classy subtle sheen

Drawbacks: Colors may appear duller

Typical Applications:  Best for applications where completely eliminating reflection is critical, typically indoors

All in all, selecting the right finish really comes down to your project's environment and the vibe you're going for.

While it can be said that a matte finish is typically best for indoor signage with gloss being valued for outdoor signs, there are exceptions for both, and this decision is typically determined on a case-by-case basis. If your graphic will be in a space with bright lights or direct sun, glare can be a real distraction, making matte the best option for you. If you want your colors to pop like crazy and grab attention from across the room, gloss would be ideal. Luster lands in that nice in-between spot, giving you some shine without going overboard. If you're still unsure, here are a few other things to consider: 

• Will it be displayed somewhere or handled frequently?
• How long do you intend to use it?
• Does your graphic contain a lot of text?
• Will it be protected or in open air?
